MidTexas Conference,
Over the last week, so many have suffered so much. Some of you have lost friends, family members, and loved ones. Many more have lost homes, herds, and livelihoods. Few of us have escaped being personally touched in one way or another by this disaster.
In the midst of the tragedy, we have also had our hearts filled by the heroism we have witnessed. From first responders to courageous neighbors, we have seen Christ shine through the lives of brave men and women. We have also been humbled by the outpouring of prayer and generosity by our people.
I am writing today to share important updates on what has already been done and what steps lie ahead. I ask that you read through carefully to the end so that you will be fully informed.
In the immediate aftermath of the floods, our Conference Superintendent began directing the use of existing flood buckets to be transported to places of urgent need. She also sent out an all call for more buckets to be assembled for use. With that call, she worked to establish outposts across the breadth and depth of our conference where those emergency resources could be quickly accessed for any future disasters. This is very important. It is critical that we have properly prepared flood buckets on hand at the time a disaster strikes.
She also asked for a special offering and established an emergency fund. Your generosity has been pouring in through that fund. We want to share that you are not alone. Call after call has come in from GMC Conferences and churches across the country who have sent donations and are gearing up to send even more support. We are blessed to be part of this Global Methodist connection.
Finally, she directed the establishment of a partnership with Texans on Mission for disaster relief training and volunteer deployments. They are a trusted and extremely well-run provider of immediate disaster relief and recovery efforts.
Rev. Brad DeHaven is serving as our initial Disaster Relief Coordinator. He has been working tirelessly to line up initial resources and urgent needs. He will continue in this role while we build out our systems for serving MidTexas during times of crisis.
It is important to remember that in the GMC, we do not have a top-down organization. The Annual Conference exists to “energize and equip local congregations for faithfulness and to keep pastors and congregations connected for Kingdom success.” This doesn’t change during a crisis. Our response reflects our shared commitment to let the local church lead the way while providing equipping and energizing resources and keeping us all connected.
Today, our Connectional Council approved sending relief funds to our local churches in Kerrville, Menard, San Saba, and San Angelo. Initially, each will receive $20,000 in a pastor’s discretionary fund to finance needed help in the community. Additional funds will be granted as are needed. These funds have spending guidelines and accounting for their use will be submitted to our Conference CFO, Jim Noble. Unused funds will be returned to the Conference where they may be redirected to other areas of disaster recovery. We believe this is the best way to equip and energize the local church to do the work of ministry on the ground.
In addition, the Connectional Council authorized me to execute a Memorandum of Understanding making Texans on Mission our partner in ministry. That will soon be in place and we will have the ability to start hands-on volunteer work across Texas. Friends, recovery will require months of effort and hard work. We must mobilize in ways that are helpful, safe, and sustainable. Texans on Mission provides turn-key support for church mission teams. They have showers, cook teams, site managers, and in the field training protocols. In the next few days, Brad DeHaven will be distributing information through our Presiding Elders and other communications avenues to share how to get started volunteering through our new partner, Texans on Mission.
In the meantime, here are three ways you can help today.
1. Pray. Take time every day and throughout every day to pray for those who have lost family, friends, and loved ones. Pray for our families that have lost their homes and businesses. Pray our farmers who have lost their crops. Pray for our ranchers who have lost their herds. Pray for our conference leaders raising and deploying resources. Pray for Brad DeHaven as he coordinates efforts. PRAYER IS OUR FIRST RESPONSE and it makes all the difference.
2. Assemble flood buckets using this list: Storm Relief Kit. These buckets are useful for floods, fires, etc. We will deploy as many as are needed for this crisis and store the extra so that we have them ready to roll at all times.
3. Make a contribution: Donate Here. These funds are being directed to the local areas most impacted for immediate use, to complete flood buckets missing items, and provide for disaster relief.
Finally, for those engaging in hands-on ministry, please read through this resource compiled by our Conference Superintendent entitled: After the Storm.
God bless you and God bless MidTexas.
