Our Prayer Shawl group continues to make sleeping mats for the homeless community. Recently we gave 19 mats out to that group. Our biggest need to make this happen is for plastic bags to be donated/recycled to our ministry. Since the pandemic, we aren’t getting many bags. We desperately need these donated plastic grocery bags. We don’t care what color or their size. We only ask that they be clean. Any shopping bag will work if they are not too stiff.
If you don’t know what happens with the plastic grocery bags we receive, I’ll try to explain. First we flatten the bags so they can be stacked. We usually stack 9 or 10 bags and begin to cut them up. We start by cutting the bottom ¼ inch off. By stacking them up we can do a large group at one time. Then the bags are cut into strips about 2” wide. Each bag gives us about 6 or 7 strips. Then one of the ladies take these individual strips and loop them together making a long rope. We call that rope Plarn because we then wind them into a ball for easy use. It is a play on the word Yarn. Then the crochet gals get busy in the actual construction of the mats. Each mat measures about 3’ wide by 6’ long. Currently we have three gals doing the work with the assistance of others who make the Plarn rope for us. So, Please, Please start bringing those plastic bags in and place them in Room 1 and we will take it from there. We’ve been talking about Joy during our Children’s Church portion of Sunday Worship. You can see Joy on the faces of those who receive these mats. Joy is something that is a two way street. You give Joy by doing something for someone in need. You receive Joy when you see the smiles on their faces when they receive that gift. So, let’s spread the Joy. Blessings, Brenda White |
