Importance: High

Dear Nurses,

The situation in the border is getting direr. We need your help now!

It is not a matter of political point of views, it is a matter of making sure we are assisting those in greatest need. It is our duty as nurses and as Christians.

Here is a quick summary of what our communities are experiencing:

Rio Grande Valley:

-          1600 people mostly Families and unaccompanied minors are crossing each day (Mon-Sun) in the McAllen area.

-          No medical services available and that is a big need as most people have been walking for months and exhibiting signs of stress, malnourishment, and low immune systems.

-          The 2 entities involved with helping are the Ministry Center in McAllen, and Daughter’s of Charity. They are stretched thin and need all the help they can get

-          Funds are needed to cover basic needs (food, underwear, hygiene items, over the counter meds, towels, etc.)

This is a lady I met when I went to the respite Center in McAllen. She is with her daughter; her husband was killed in Honduras. Her shoes and her daughter’s shoes gone and obviously she felt embarrassed by it when someone asked her why she had no shoes. We could not get her any shoes that day.

Laredo:

-          The three entities involved are the Catholic Charities, Holing institute, and Baptist

-          150 people released daily (Monday-Sunday) by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Mostly Family Units.

-          Everyone is stretch thin. All the help they are getting is from volunteers.

-          Funds are needed to cover basic needs

-          Holding Institute’s Website

At the Holding Institute

Del Rio:

-          Has Never had to work with a similar situation so everything had to be set up from scratch.

-          Matri, our WN has mobilized a group of people to take action and built a coalition in no time. Through that they were able to get the city to open a building as a respite center

-          They have about 100 people released daily.

-          The difference from Laredo and McAllen is that buses do not leave daily, so most people have to spend 1 or 2 nights in the city.

-          They need funds to cover basic needs for people.

-          The Coalition’s name is Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition, and this is their website: https://vvbhcoalition.com/

Eagle Pass

-          About 80 people released Daily at night.

-          There is no guidance to the people coming in, no aid group involved yet.

-          Pastor Becky Ballou from got call from CBP telling her that the families were on the street. She spent most of the night taking families from the street to the catholic church who housed them over night.

-          The Bus company has tripled their bus fair to San Antonio taking advantage of the people who already do not have resources and going through very difficult situations.

-          They need funds for basic needs (food, water, clothing, hygiene kits, towels, etc)

-          Here is the Website of Mission Border Hope, which is the mission of the Methodist Church in Eagle pass where Pastor Becky is a driving force

Crossing around Eagle pass. With the rains a number of people have drowned. This day a 2 year old , a 7 year old and the mom almost drowned.

WHAT TO DO?

1.       The best thing you can do is donate money or gift cards (Visa, HEB, Walmart)

2.       Rally your church to get them to donate money or gift cards.

3.       Speak of this issue not as an immigration issue, but a crisis in which we have to get involved as brothers and sisters of those who are going through awful situations.

4.       At this point it does not matter how and why people are here, what matters is that they are suffering, that the people on the ground who are helping are very few and they are stretched thin and that we need to take action!

Please know that the 4 places listed above are doing so much work with VERY little. The people being helped are just like you and me, but they are facing terrible situations and need a loving helping hand from all of us! My hope is that you can encourage your church, faith community, or community, to give some resources to those who are in the greatest need.

I love you all!
