>From our district Superintendent, Andy Smith Dear Hill Country District Churches, I spoke with Rev Bill Harris, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sonora, TX today and he relayed the following information. He also said that he could be contacted directly at (512) 623-0333. If he cannot answer questions, he will direct to someone that can provide needed answers on immediate relief efforts. The flash flood impacted the low lying area of town which is predominantly families in lower income and the working poor. Approximately 220 residences were impacted with as much as 4 to 6 feet of water in homes. Work teams such as those from the UMC Early Response Teams trained by UMCOR are being mobilized in the RIo Texas UMC Annual Conference. A “loosely organized” group of city/county/church/non-profits volunteers in Sonora has emerged to help the County assess damage and begin arranging for “mucking out” damaged homes. Donated Funds are being directed to The San Angelo Area Foundation. http://www.saafound.org/ On-site cleanup labor coordination is through Tammy Fisher at the Sutton County Civic Center. Tammy can be reached at 202-468-5262 Material goods for recovery are not yet being accepted as there is no storage available. Cleanup supplies would be accepted, but a phone call needs to come first to make arrangements. Thanks for your inquiry and feel free to pass this email along to any interested partners.
