Pastor Cynthia "Bun" Jackson“Hello…My name is Cynthia Jackson, but I prefer to be called Bun. This is my nickname. My brother gave me this name when I was young and it stuck. I have been called Bun longer than I have my formal name. Bun is short and easy. I hope that you will call me that also.”
Pastor Bun comes to First United Methodist Mertzon from Gruene, Texas, where she was a Certified Lay Minister at Gruene United Methodist Church.
“I came to Gruene in 2008 when worship was held at (New Braunfels) Canyon High School,” Pastor Bun explained. “Slowly I became more involved in what goes on around this place.”
Pastor Bun will serve FUMC Mertzon in the capacity of Licensed Local Pastor. She will lead worship services starting this Sunday, June 28. Bible Studies begin at 9:30 a.m. and worship starts at 11 a.m.
“I think that my life experiences will help me to fit into Mertzon,” she said. “I am very excited about coming and being part of this community and the community of faith. I am very excited about what God is doing and want us to work together to grow in faith and love for each other.”
Pastor Bun is not unaccustomed to living and working in a small town.“I grew up in Southcentral New Mexico in the small town of Tularosa,” she said. “I started school there with my younger brother Dale. My mother worked for the only doctor in the town. My exposure to health care probably began then. There was no daycare and if the doctor was called out after hours we went with my mom on the house call. We lived in Tularosa until I began the fourth grade. At that time we moved to Ruidoso… When I was 15 we moved to Central Texas. This was quite a change from mountains and dry air to rolling hills and tremendous humidity of central Texas, but I have grown to the changes.”
She attended Southwest Texas State University, now known as Texas State University, in San Marcos, graduating in 1986 with a BS in Microbiology and in 1988, a second BS in Medical Technology. She also began work on a Masters of Forensic Toxicology degree. She worked for more than 25 years as a Medical Technologist.
But her experiences are many and varied, she said.“I have had many jobs including roofer, a 33-mile paper route, general construction, and working on farms and ranches with cattle, horses and alpacas,” Pastor Bun said. “I enjoy hunting and being outdoors. I also enjoy working with farm animals. I have a few cows, a pig and some chickens. I have had horses and rodeoed when I was younger.”
She also loves being involved with the local schools.“Friday night football has been a big part of my family for many years and I look forward to being involved in the schools atheletic events.”
Pastor Bun replaces Pastor Mark Smith who has been transferred to FUMC Ganado after serving the Mertzon church since 2009.
